Privacy notice: how we use your data

Skills for Careers is funded and managed by the Department for Education (DfE). The DfE is the data controller for this website. A data controller determines how and why personal data can be processed.

What data we collect from you

We collect some data automatically when you visit Skills for Careers. This includes your Internet Protocol (IP) address and details of which version of a web browser you use.

Performance analysis

We also carry out performance analysis to see how you use Skills for Careers and how well the site performs on your device during your visit. 

Where you provide consent, we collect the following information:

  • the pages you visit on Skills for Careers
  • how long you spend on each Skills for Careers page
  • how you got to the site
  • what you click on while you’re visiting the site

No directly identifiable personal information is collected through Google Analytics, for example your name or address.

Why we need your data

We need this information to provide you with access to this website and to monitor use of the site to identify security threats.

We need analytics data to make sure the site is meeting your needs and find out how to improve it.

The legal basis for processing data in relation to site security is our legitimate interests in ensuring the security and integrity of the website. It is necessary to perform a task in the public interest or in the exercise of our functions as a government department.

The legal basis for performing web analytics is your consent. You will be asked for your consent when first landing on the page. If you do not give it, you will still be able to use the page. If you do give it and change your mind, you can update your cookie settings.

What we do with your data

We may share data with other government departments, agencies and public bodies where there is a legitimate and justifiable business need.

We will not:

  • sell or rent your data to third parties
  • share your data with third parties for marketing purposes

We will share your data if we are required to do so by law, for example by court order or to prevent fraud or other crime.

How long we keep your data

We only keep your personal data for as long as:

  • the law requires us to
  • we need for the purposes listed above

Google Analytics data is deleted after 50 months.

Your rights

You have the right to request:

  • information about how your personal data is processed
  • a copy of that personal data
  • that anything inaccurate in your personal data is corrected immediately

You can also:

  • raise an objection about how your personal data is processed
  • request that your personal data is erased if there is no longer a justification for it
  • ask that the processing of your personal data is restricted in certain circumstances

If you have any of these requests, you can contact the Department for Education.

Changes to this notice

We may change this privacy notice. When we make changes to this notice, the ‘last updated’ date at the top of this page will also change. Any changes to this privacy notice will apply to you and your data immediately. If these changes affect how your personal data is processed, we will take reasonable steps to make sure you know.
